Everything You Need To Know About Knife Handle Materials

Posted by Derek Swanson on 5th Jun 2023

When it comes to buying a knife, one of the most important factors to consider is the handle. There are various materials used for constructing handles, and each has its own unique properties that make them more suitable for certain tasks. At District Cutlery, we offer knives with handles crafted from several different materials for you to choose from. Read on to learn more about the advantages and disadvantages of each handle material.

Wood

Wood handles have traditionally been the go-to choice for knives due to their classic look and feel. They provide a good grip when wet or dry and are lightweight enough that they won’t weigh down the knife. Wood handles do require some maintenance as they may warp over time if not properly cared for. With regular cleaning and oiling, though, wood handles should last for many years of use. Many Japanese knives use an inexpensive yet durable plywood called pakka. Nicer, more expensive choices include Ebony, Ironwood and Rosewood.

Plastic, Rubber & Laminates

Artificial handle materials are typically lightweight and long-lasting, able to withstand moisture and other environmental conditions. Plastic and polyurethane are a popular choice with German and American manufacturers. Many independent knifemakers like G10, a popular handle laminate due to its strength and heft. It’s also non-slip when wet, making it excellent for slicing and chopping tasks. Rubber handles are a popular choice for commercial grade knives thanks to the sure grip they offer when wet.

Micarta

Micarta is a durable laminate material made from layers of fabric reinforced with resin. It's lightweight yet provides excellent grip, making it ideal for tasks like hunting or fishing, where you need a secure grip. It can be finished in various colors, textures, and patterns to give your knife a unique look. Micarta is also highly resistant to water and corrosion, adding to its overall durability and longevity.

Metal

Stainless steel and aluminum handles are one of the most durable handle materials available. They have excellent corrosion resistance and are designed to withstand the rigors of heavy-duty use. The downside is metal handles can be quite slippery when wet, so they may not be the best choice for tasks where precision is key.

No matter what type of handle material you choose, it’s important to take good care of your knife. Regularly cleaning and oiling the handle can help keep it in top condition for years to come.
