Gyuto Rhymes With Pluto

Gyuto rhymes with Pluto, our second favorite planet. Lots of English language speakers ask us how to pronounce the name of the most popular Japanese kitchen knife. They often misplace the "O" and the "U" sounds, saying gyoh-too. Others annunciate an extra syllable, which sounds like ghee-yoo-toh.

Gyuto is properly pronounced with 2 syllables: gyu-toh. If you can say the word glue, saying gyu is pretty easy. If your toe is sticky, you might have stepped in some glue. Glue-toe also rhymes with gyuto.

Maybe you've been lucky enough to try Japanese beef? It's called wagyu. It's also pronounced in 2 syllables: Wa-gyu, not wag-you. "Wa" describes certain things that are Japanese, and "gyu" means beef (or cow). So if you say wagyu beef, you are saying Japanese beef beef. Just say wagyu.

On our site you will see the words "wa gyuto", which essentially describes a Japanese-style-handle beef knife (but this knife is for veggies too!). You can get different types of blades with wa handles, which are normally oval or octagonal, such as wa santokus, wa nakiris and wa sujihikis.
